- Tamalpais TimberWorks owner and master designer Bill Callahan.
-
- Ten years ago, Bill had a burning desire to leave his computer
profession of twenty years and pursue his love of art and nature.
While playing with his son at a local playground, he noticed
that the modular play structure employed a unique metal fastening
system that joined the logs. Inspired by this, Bill began identifying
his design objectives for a furniture assembly for building furniture.
The resulting design objectives included: create a simple fastening
assembly that would serve as the furniture's primary structural
component, making the product easy to manufacture, simple to
assemble, and affordable; create a quality furniture product
that would not compromise workmanship, materials or construction,
thus providing a lifetime of pleasure and service; and create
a furniture product that would be environmentally correct in
every way and attractive to people who love art, nature and the
environment. Today, Arts & Culture embraces all of these
objectives with beauty, style and substance.
-
- Much of Bill's inspiration for designing and building furniture
comes from his admiration of turn-of-the-century furniture designer
Gustav Stickley, known for his Arts and Crafts or Mission furniture.
"I have always admired the quality and integrity of Gustav
Stickley's furniture, and my Arts & Culture furniture reflects
the same high quality and distinctive simplicity of his and other
Arts and Crafts-era designers" said Bill. "Arts &
Culture furniture will be especially attractive to people who
want their furniture to be a reflection of the things they love
and value, particularly, art, nature and the environment,"
he added. Bill has also drawn inspiration from Japanese Tansu
furniture, which also employs decorative metal designs and highly
durable construction.
